Complete spoon carving (Rīkona)

Explore the craft of spoon carving from log to finished spoon. In this class you’ll learn to split out billets of green wood for carving and shape them with an axe. You’ll then carve your spoons to completion with knives, learning about safe techniques, spoon design and how to sharpen your tools along the way. Taught over a weekend, this is a comprehensive class that's great for beginners who want the satisfying experience of carving spoons from scratch, or as a refresher for more experienced spoon carvers.

Please note:

All materials and tools will be provided.
This class is held over two days and is weather dependent. You must be able to make the rain dates too:
- Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 November: 10am-3pm (rain dates: 14/15 December)
A refund will not be given if the first dates are cancelled due to weather and you cannot make the rain date.
This workshop is suitable for adults and only suited to those who can work safely without direct supervision with very sharp hand tools.

Bookings are non-refundable. If for any reason (this includes illness, travel delays, and injuries) you need to cancel your workshop, you will receive a refund minus a $30 administration fee. This is provided you contact us at least 14 full days before your booking.

Douglas Horrell has taught spoon carving since 2017 and specialises in hand carved, functional items such as spoons and bowls, as well as having an interest in chair-making and other green wood traditions. He also has a growing interest in tool making - forging his own tools from high carbon steel. Douglas is teaching spoon carving and sharpening, and his kuksa workshop is new in 2024. He also hosts the monthly spoon club sessions.
